He excelled at painting landscapes and figures. His landscapes follow in the grand and archaic brushwork of Li T’ang, while his figures paintings resemble the taut, animated features of Sung Hsü and Ts’ui Tzu-chung. In a passage from “The Record of the Yüeh-yang Pavilion,” written by Fan Chung-yen, a dark scene of wind-driven rain is described as whipping up waves and obstructing the passage of merchant ships. Wang Shih-i has very skillfully illustrated this scene, successfully capturing the gloomy, stormy scene as suggested in Fan’s passage.
