石渠寶笈初編(下冊),頁732&*故宮書畫錄(卷八),第四冊,頁164&* Sung Hsu (style name Ch’u-yang, sobriquets Shih-men and T’ien-ch’ih-fa-seng; Buddhist name Tsu-hsüan) was a native of Chia-hsing, Chekiang. Although the early part of his life remains unclear, he is known to have traveled to Sungkiang at around the age of 50 and come in contact with poets and painters there. Studying the style of Shen Chou (1427-1509), he excelled at both landscape and figure painting. This painting is of a clear river in bright moonight. A monk is seen approaching by boat a bank of willows with a pagoda and temple. The trees and rocks were rendered using a worn brush to create rounded strokes similar to those of Shen Chou. The coloring is clear and the composition abbreviated, just as described in a phrase from the artist’s inscription: “The bright reflection of water and moon……” Thus, Sung Hsü was able to describe a meditative realm of tranquility. &* 宋旭(西元一五二五至一六○七年以後),浙江嘉興人。字初暘,號石門,又號天池髮僧,法名祖玄,早年身世不詳,約五十歲時至松江,與當地詩人、畫家有來往。善山水,師沈周,兼長人物畫。 本幅畫澄江明月,柳堤塔寺,一僧乘舟而來。樹石純用禿筆中鋒,近於沈周。設色明淨,構景簡略,如題句所述,以「水月澄輝」之景,寫出空寂的禪境。 本幅選自明人畫扇冊第二開。
