(20110407)&* The text of this stele (also prefixed Chen Shuyi; now at the Temple of Confucius in Qufu, Shandong) is in clerical script with the head in seal script. Chen Shuyi (style name Ziyan), native to Xuchang in Yingchuan, was son of the Chen emperor Xuandi. In the Daye era, as Magistrate of Qufu, he restored the Temple of Confucius. In 611 the stele was erected, and Cultivated Talent Zhong Xiaojun of Jizhou composed a record in stone. Confucianism was venerated then; in 608 a 32nd-descendant of Confucius, Kong Sizhe, was ennobled “Marquis Perpetuating the Sage.” Hence, the stele states, “The new Perpetuating the Sage re-enlightening the land.” The clerical script is pure and handsome, the characters almost angular. Unfortunately, the calligrapher is unknown.(20110407)
