&* Wang Wu (style name Ch’in-chung; sobriquet Wang-an) called himself Hsűeh-tien tao-jen and was a native of Ch’ang-chou, Kiangsu. His family had a large art collection, and he was also an excellent connoisseur. He fervently copied famous works of the Sung (960-1279), Yűan (1279-1368), and Ming (1368-1644) artists whom he admired and was thus able to acquire their methods. All of his paintings of flowers, birds, and other animals are full of animation. In his time, he thus became as famous as Yűn Shou-p’ing (1633-1690). This is a painting of several stalks of emerald bamboo and branches of red plum blossoms which complement each other. The plum branches extend up, down, to, and fro in many different angles. The artist rendered the bamboo with the ‘sketching ideas’ method. The multiple petals of the red blossoms were provided a white wash as yellow strokes define the stamens, thereby imparting a strong literati air to the work. The seventh leaf of the album from which this painting has been selected is dated of 1687, indicating that this leaf was done at approximately that time. &*1.
