In 1067 at the age of twenty-two, he passed the chin-shih civil service examination and subsequently held such offices as District Defender, Editor, Imperial Diarist, Historiography Compiler, and Prefect, etc. This letter was written in small characters in semi-cursive script. The structure of the characters leans strongly in many different poses that is a unique feature of Huang's calligraphic style. However, there are fewer pauses in his strokes here, making this work distinct from his large character calligraphy. This piece entered the Sung (960-1279) and Yüan (1271-1368) imperial repositories and was also later among the works housed in the San His-t'ang (Three Treasures Studio). Currently it is in the Album of Twelve Calligraphic Masters From the Sung Dynasty.&*黃庭堅（西元一Ｏ四五－一一Ｏ五年），江西分寧人。字魯直，號涪翁。幼警悟，事親至孝。治平四年（一Ｏ六七）舉進士，工詩文，尤長於書法。善草書，楷法亦自成一家。紹聖二年（一Ｏ九五）三月，在荊州登船離行前，以小行楷書與公蘊知縣道珍重。本幅字勢欹側，結體開張，具其書風特色，所書筆法沈穩，惟筆畫中之頓挫起伏較少，與大行書略有差別。此牘曾入宋元秘府，後並入〈三希堂法帖〉。(20110101)&*Huang Tingjian (style name Luzhi, sobriquet Fuweng) was a native of Fenning, Jiangxi. Precocious as a youth, he was also very filial. A Presented Scholar (jinshi) of 1067, he excelled at poetry and especially calligraphy. He was particularly good at cursive script, his regular script also in a style of his own. In the third lunar month of 1095, not long before boarding a boat and leaving Jingzhou, he wrote to Prefect Gongyun asking that he take care. The characters here are forceful and slanting with forms spread out, much in Huang's unique style. The brush method is also steady, except for less rising and falling of the brush, which differs slightly from his large running script. This letter entered the Song and Yuan dynasty imperial repositories and was also later included in "Model Calligraphies of the Sanxi Hall." (20110101)&*黄庭堅（1045-1105）、江西分寧の人。字は魯直、号は涪翁。幼少の頃から聡明で、父母に孝行を尽くした。治平4年（1067）進士。詩文に優れ、書法も得意とした。草書を善くしたが、楷書でも一派を成した。紹聖2年（1095）3月、荊州から船出する前に、公蘊知県あてに小行楷書でしたためた挨拶状である。斜めに傾いた文字、開いた結体など、その書風の特色が見て取れ、筆法には落ち着きがある。しかし、筆画の抑揚や起伏が少なく、この点が大行書とはやや異なる。かつては宋、元の宮廷に収蔵されていたが、後に「三希堂法帖」に収録された。(20110101)
