故宮書畫錄(卷八),第四冊,頁141&*故宮書畫圖錄,第二十三冊,頁62-69&*吳彬,字文中,或作文仲,號質先。福建莆田人,流寓金陵。萬曆間,以書畫擅名,尤善佛像及山水,人物、山水形狀奇異,逈別前人。生卒年未詳,其活動約在萬曆十九年(一五七一)至天啟六年(一六二六)間。  案,楞嚴會上,二十五大士各依佛之問,陳圓通之法門,有二十五種,即六塵、六根、六識、七大。本幅畫持地菩薩之圓通,即七大中之地大也。其畫馬如同人物,亦賦予奇異之造形,別有古拙之趣。  本幅為畫楞嚴廿五圓通佛像之第十八幅。&*Virudhaka Wu Pin (fl. 1591-1626) Ming Dynasty Wu Pin, style name Wen-chung, sobriquet Chih-hsien, was a native of P'u-t'ien, Fukien. However, he spent most of his life in Nanking. During the reign of the Wan-li Emperor (1573-1620), he became famous as a painter and calligrapher. His ink line-drawings were especially fine, and his paintings of Buddhist figure subjects were known for their unconventional, even weird forms. His landscape paintings also exhibit great originality. This album leaf is taken from an album depicting the twenty-five great deities mentioned in the Surangama Sutra. These deities are each believed to possess one of the twenty-five supernatural powers of omnipresence. The deity represented here, Virudhaka, possesses the power of earth. In this painting, the horses are depicted in an exaggerated manner. The brushwork is nervously modulated, the colors are bright and elegant.
