Beginning his career as an artisan painter, he later studied under Chou Ch’en and eventually achieved fame. All of Ch’iu’s works have the fine delicacy of court styles yet also possess a literary spirit. He is thus known as one of the Four Masters of the Ming. This work depicts one of the most famous literary gatherings in Chinese history. On the 3rd day of the 3rd month in 353 AD, Wang Hsi-chih met with 42 scholar-friends to celebrate the annual ablution at his Orchid Pavilion retreat. His preface to the writings composed then became one of the most celebrated works in Chinese calligraphy. Ch’iu Ying’s figure paintings usually follow academic styles. This work in the literati tradition is unusual.
