In the middle scroll Šàkyamuni preaches the Buddhist sûtra. On the left and right scrolls are eitht Bodhisattvas listening to him. The Bodhisattvas all wear a precious cap and heavenly attire, and are each further adorned with a necklace of precious stones. All stand in respectful attention on lotuses and possess an air of mercy and peace. The brushwork is elegant, forcefu1, and fluid; the application of color magnificent and charming. The two scrolls are excellent renderings of Buddhist subjects. In the middle scrol1, Šàkyamuni Buddha sits cross-1egged, and his right hand gestures in one of the mystic positions. The two attendant disciples Ânanda and Mahâkâšyapa stand on Šàkyamuni's left and right. In terms of material, brushwork or application of color, this section is different from the other two scrolls. Moreover, the positioning of Ânanda and Mahâkâšyapa in wrong, arousing suspicion that this section was painted by a Ch'ing dynasty court craftsmanpainter.
