石渠寶笈續編(重華宮),第三冊,頁1609&*故宮書畫錄(卷八),第四冊,頁76&*故宮書畫圖錄,第六冊,頁245-246&*  沈周(西元一四二七至一五○九年),江蘇長洲人。字啟南,號石田,又號白石翁。為人寬厚有大度,能詩文,工書法,又善山水,並兼工墨畫花果、翎毛等。畫史上被譽為明代四大畫家之一。   本幅畫雪景,大地一片白茫茫。士人渡橋探梅,僕從持傘隨行,對山巖穴中,飛泉激瀉。前景平闊,一望無遺,後方高峯突起,曲徑通幽。畫法用筆勁挺,沈周六十歲左右作品,大抵如此。 &*Snow Scene Shen Chou (1427-1509) Ming Dynasty Shen Chou (style name Ch’i-nan, sobriquets Shih-t’ien and Pai-shih-weng) was a native of Ch’ang-chou in Kiangsu. An accomplished scholar, he was an able poet, essayist, and calligrapher as well as an excellent painter. Although Shen Chou is best known for his landscapes, he was also talented in depicting flowers, fruits, vegetables, birds and figures in ink. He has been proclaimed as one of the Four Masters of the Ming dynasty. The earth is covered by a boundless layer of whiteness in this winter scene. A scholar midway across the bridge stops to gaze at plum blossoms, while a servant behind him holds up an umbrella. From a deep crevice in the mountain face, a waterfall surges forth. The foreground scene, in its expansiveness, is rich with details. Tall peaks rise sharply in the background, and a winding path leads back into a secluded place. The brushwork is vigorous and firm, typical of the works by Shen Chou when he was about 60 years of age. &*  雪景大幅,筆極勁挺,沈周六十歲左右作品,大抵如是。傳世之作,可供比較者,美國波斯頓藝術博物館所藏之十四月夜卷,及台北私人收藏之灞橋詩思卷皆六十歲所畫。惟兩卷幅小而又為紙本,筆皆較此精練耳。橋上小驢,與灞橋卷上所畫皆短面而肥頰,惟一赭一墨,毛色異耳。對山巖穴中飛泉激瀉,造意命筆,與紐約翁萬戈先生藏文沈合卷相同。此幀無年款,定為弘治丙午(一四八六),沈周六十歲。&*Snow Scene Shen Chou (1427-1509) Ming dynasty The brushwork in this large scroll is extremely vigorous and blunt; most paintings executed when Shen Chou was around 60 share this quality. Of his surviving works, we can bring together for comparison “Watching the Mid-autumn Moon” in the Boston Museum and “Poetic Thoughts on the Pa Bridge”, in a private collection in Taipei, both painted when the artist was 59. Both are short handscrolls on paper and are mare fully developed and confident than this large hanging scroll painted on silk. The small donkey on the bridge in “Snow Scene”, with its short head and thick muzzle, is very close to the donkey in “Poetic Thoughts on the Pa Bridge”; the only difference is that one is brown, the other black. A waterfall cascades from a grotto in the cliff face; both the idea and its treatment are similar to a handscroll by Shen Chou and Wen Cheng-ming in the collection of Mr. Wango Weng in New York.
