In the center and background stretches a green, shady forest where servants are busy transplanting bamboo. The human figures, buildings, and trees are meticulously rendered stroke by stroke in exquisite detail; the mineral green coloring lends an air of refined beauty. In the lower left is the signature "Made by Shih-fu (Ch’iu Ying)." Ch’iu Ying, one of the "Four Masters of the Ming Dynasty," was from T’ai-ts’ang, Kiangsu. His style-name was Shih-fu; his sobriquet, Shih-chou. Originally a lacquer artist, he later met Chou Ch’en, under whose tutelage he gradually gained fame as an artist. Ch’iu Ying was noted for his paintings of landscapes and human figures as well as his renditions of flowers, birds, and animals.
