It represents the corner of a garden with a date tree and hundreds of fruit which have attracted the attention of a group of children. One of them has already started to climb the tree to bend down a branch and pick the dates. The other children are helping to gather fruit from the tree and the ground. Several of them seem to have prepared utensils beforehand to collect the fruit, while others use their clothes in a makeshift manner. Although this work bears neither seal nor signature of the artist, the essence of this lively and raucous scene has been most successfully captured. Dates were a popular fruit in China as far back as the T'ang dynasty (618-907).
