&* Ren Renfa was a famous painter, calligraphy, and irrigation specialist. Gifted at painting figures and saddled horses, he rivaled Zhao Mengfu and achieved a name for himself. This work is based on Du Fu’s “Song on the Eight Immortals of the Wine Cup,” depicting Li Bai and 7 other Tang poets in a drunken scene of reciting poetry. The figures are untrammeled in this concise work of elegant colors. The use of brush and ink, however, is slightly weak, unlike that of Ren Renfa, suggesting the hand of a Ming (1368-1644) artist instead. Here at the front in the lower right appears “shen 甚,” the 302nd character from the “Thousand Character Classic” used by Xiang Yuanbian to accession his art collection. It also has his “Xiang Molin’s Connoisseurship Seal.”
