A Mongolian by origin from the Uighur clan, he was the nephew of the famous calligrapher Hsien-yü Shu and grandson of the Prince of Kao-ch'ang. His style name was Ts'ang-yen, his sobriquet Ts'ang-ya. He reached the official rank of Assistant Provincial Judge of Chiang-tung, and he was learned in the laws of music and became known for his paintings of dragons. A slender promontory juts sharply into the air out of a sea of clouds. A hoary old pine commands a high position on the rock and rules this scene of unexpectedly strange composition. The brushwork emanates a thoroughly scholarly air.
