&* Huang Shen was a native of Ning-hua in Fukien who resided in Yangchow selling his paintings. His style is characterized by a kind of casual elegance and freedom, leading him to be praised as one of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangchow. According to Records of the Historian, Ching K’o from the state of Wei in the Warring States period (475-221 BC) made the acquaintance of the famous chu-lute player Kao Chien-li in a city in the state of Yen, and the two became friends. Often going out for a drink, Kao would play the lute and Ching K’o would harmonize in song, becoming famous in their day. The chu-lute is similar in form to a ch’in-lute but is played with two pieces of bamboo. The painting here by Huang Shen probably depicts this story. This work, donated to the National Palace Museum by Mr. Ch’en Kuei-ching, is signed and dated to the equivalent of 1725, when the artist was 38 years old.
