With the discovery of oracle bones at Hsiao-t'un in An-yang, Honan province, Lo was the first to relate them to the capital of the late Shang dynasty. Dating oracle bone script to this period, Lo Chen-yu became regarded as one of the Four Great Scholars in his field. Although Lo Chen-yu is renowned for his wealth of scholarly publications, his accomplishments in the realm of Ch’ing calligraphy also deserve recognition. Due to his cultivation in the study of ancient characters, the practice of oracle bone script, bronze script, and small seal script seem to have come naturally for him. This work was done after a Ch'in dynasty (221-207 BC) decree in small seal script. The characters are evenly arranged and the strokes decisively placed, making this a fine example of small seal script.
