At 19, he entered the Jesuit order as a novitiate, and his early training included painting and architecture. Sent to China, he arrived in 1715. His art came to the attention of the emperor, and he served as a court painter. In this painting of two goats, they appear deep in the mountains with an old twisting cypress towering above. The detailed and lively nature of the animals convey the artist’s command of the brush. The style of the mountains and rocks also represents that current among court painters of the day.
