石渠寶笈初編(養心殿),上冊,頁501&*故宮書畫錄(卷八),第四冊,頁165&* 周臣(約西元一四五○-一五三五年),江蘇吳縣人。字舜卿,號東村,善山水人物。山水師陳暹,間傳宋人畫法,得力於李唐、劉松年、馬遠、夏珪。用筆純熟,風骨峭勁雅健,傳授筆法與唐寅、仇英。 重簷高閣,依山臨江,江水翻湧,一舟升帆欲發,船上的人或合力升帆,或撐篙,或掌舵,神態畢具。岸上林木傾側,樹葉迎風飛揚。全畫構圖綿密,描繪生動,雖為小幅卻具有大氣勢。 本幅選自明人扇頭畫冊一開。 &*River Sails and Mountain Pavilions Chou Ch’en (ca. 1450-1535) Ming Dynasty Chou Ch’en (style name Shun-ch’ing; sobriquet Tung-ts’un) was a native of Wu County in Kiangsu who excelled at landscape and figure painting. He learned landscape painting from Ch’en Hsien (1450-1496), but also based his style on the works of such Southern Sung (1127-1279) masters as Li T’ang, Liu Sung-nien, Ma Yuan, and Hsia Kuei. Chou’s experienced brushwork was sharp, strong, refined, and vigorous, and he transmitted his style to the Ming masters T’ang Yin and Ch’iu Ying. In this painting, a tall pavilion with multiple eaves leans upon a mountainside bounded by a surging river, upon which a boat with its sail raised is about to depart. Depicted in a spirited manner on the boat are firgures working together to hoist the sail and to pole and steer the boat. The trees on the shore are bending to the side with their leaves blowing in the strong wind. The entire composition is detailed and lively. Though a small painting, it has a great deal of force.
