In 1730, Chiang P’u came in fourth place in the metropolitan examination. Following his death, he was bestowed with the posthumous name of “Wen-k’o (Literary Disposition).” He excelled at painting flowers and followed the family tradition, developing his own compositional style and creating unusual and interesting paintings. Some of Chiang P’u’s works bear inscriptions by the Ch’ien-lung emperor (r. 1736-1795). This scroll opens with two poems in five-and seven-character verse composed by the Ch’ien-lung emperor and calligraphed by Chiang P’u. Ch’ien-lung’s verse follows in the Sung dynasty (960-1279) tradition of composing couplets for the New Year. After the poems are depictions of a vase of flowers, a ju-i scepter, three firecrackers, a lily, and a persimmon. These auspicious objects symbolize the New Year blessing, “May all wishes be fulfilled (pai-shih ju-i).” The scroll closes with eleven auspicious poems for the New Year written by Chiang P’u and ten other officials.
