Hsiang Sheng-mo first learned to paint landscapes in the manner of Wen Cheng-ming (1470-1559), but later studied the works of the Sung and Yüan dynasty masters. He also excelled at painting flowers, bamboo, trees, and rocks. In the foreground of this painting an old scholar stands with his staff under three tall pines. In the middle distance a stretch of sandy banks spreads on both sides of a spring. In the far distance clouds envelop the high mountains, accentuating the feeling of an expansive distance.
