The Yami canoes were larger ones crewed by 6-10 men and smaller ones crewed by three. The boats were used for fishing and transporting people and goods. The side of the canoes were decorated with white, black and red painted human figures, whirlpools, waves and sun patterns unique to the Ami, which were good luck charm The crew of the large boats would be men belonging to the same family who would fish together and share the catch. The smaller boats would be crewed by men from a single nuclear family. There were various taboos involved in collecting materials to build the boats, building them and launching. It was especially important to have a large ceremony, attended by friends and relatives, for large carved boats, to pray for good luck and safe fishing."
