(20100103)&* Wu Hufan (native to Suzhou, Jiangsu) was the grandson of the famed late-Qing Bronze-and-Stele painter and calligrapher Wu Dacheng (1835-1902). With broad learning from his family, he also excelled in art. He was gifted at connoisseurship, amassing a great collection under the name “Studio of Plum Blossom Scenery.” This work donated to the Museum by Mr. Lin Zongyi is a folding fan mounted as an album leaf. Dated to 1943, green bamboo sway in the breeze using “boneless” color washes, while to the side is a slope and bamboo shoots. Wu originally was known for landscape painting, which was later overshadowed by his fame in bamboo. This fine combination of painting and calligraphy exudes an air of spirit and elegance.(20100103)
