&* Ch’ien Hui-an (given name Kui-ch’ang; style name Chi-sheng; sobriquets Shuang-kuan-lou and Ch’ing-hsi ch’iao-tzu) was a native of Pao-shan (modern Shanghai). One document states that he was from Hu-chou, Chekiang, and another records that he was from Jen-ho (modern Hangchow) but lived in Shanghai. He was skilled at depicting human figures, ladies, and various objects. He also excelled at painting bamboo, flowers and plants, and landscapes. Beside the waves of a river, an old man holds a bamboo basket and looks inside to count how many fish he has caught. Ch’ien’s brushstrokes are full of many breaks and turns, giving his forms a carved feeling. The focus of this painting is the old fisherman in tattered clothing, and Ch’ien attempts to emphasize his carefree way of dressing and his complete frank state of mind. Ch’ien has captured a cute scene by depicting the old man in ragged clothing with a completely white head of hair contrasted by the dissimilar, young figure by his side. &*1.
