&*Depicted here are two of the twelve flowers, or “flower spirits,” associated with each of the twelve months. An orchid with exposed roots and a peony slant upward from the left side of the painting, as if they are swaying in the wind. Shen was a careful colorist; here he has used “boneless” light washes, but has not failed to depict the beautiful fullness or elegant charm of the peony. Shen Chen-lin, style-named Feng-chin, was from Wu County in Kiangsu. During the mid-nineteenth century, Shen was employed at the Imperial Academy of Painting in the Inner Court. He was noted for his portrayals of human subjects, his paintings from nature of flowers and birds, his landscapes, and so on. Empress Dowager T’zu-hsi herself gave him a plaque embellished with a phrase written in her own hand: “Marvelously Gifted in Depicting the Spirit of his Subject.”
