石渠寶笈初編(養心殿),上冊,頁494-495&*故宮書畫錄(卷八),第四冊,頁140&*故宮書畫圖錄,第二十二冊,頁272-275 &*文徵明(西元一四七○至一五五九年),江蘇長洲人。初名壁,字徵明,以字聞名於世,號停雲生、衡山居士。學文於吳寬,學書於李應楨,學畫於沈周。世宗時,預修武宗實錄,年九十去世,謚貞獻先生。本幅選自文徵明畫扇冊。寫枯木、竹梢,雙雀戲逐其間。構圖簡明,於曠遠寂寥中,而生趣靈動。 &*Wen Cheng-ming was a native of Ch’ang-chou in Kiangsu province. Although his given name was Pi’ he was best known under his sobriquet Cheng-ming. Another sobriquet was Cheng-chung. His style names were T’ing-yun-sheng and Heng-shan Chu-shih. He studied literature with Wu Kuan, his calligraphy style was based on that of Li Ying-cheng and his painting was under Shen Chou’s tutorage. During the reign of Shih-tsung, he participated in editing Wu-tsung Shih-lu (Records of Emperor Wu-tsung). He died at the age of ninety. His posthumous title was Cheng-hsien. This painting depicts two sparrows playing amid withered trees and bamboos. Though simple in composition, this spacious and quiet scene comes to life suddenly with the playful sparrows.
