&*Plum Blossoms and Camellia Ma Yüan-yü (1669-1722) Ch’ing Dynasty Ma Yüan-yü (tzu Fu-hsi, hao Ch’i-hsia and T’ien-yü shan-jen) was a native of Ch’ang-shu, Kiangsu. A well-known painter of birds and flowers, he was a pupil of Yün Shou-p’ing early in his life; later he and Chiang T’ing-hsi would discuss painting principles, and his flowers showed this influence. Wang Hui commented that he recognized Ma Yüan-yü as one who did not copy others, but who was a better artist than Ch’en Tao-fu and Lu Chih. Upon examination of actual works, however, it appears that his paintings are refined and decorative. His brush-strokes do not show the experience of Ch’en Tao-fu, nor the robust quality of Lu Chih; he also lacks the dashing rhythm of his teacher, Yün Shou-p’ing.
