Chang Hung excelled at painting from nature. This painting, even though it is a small work, freely executed, is eminently charming. Chang Hung (whose style name was Chün-tu and sobriquet, Among the Cranes) was from Wu Prefecture in what is now Soochow, Kiangsu. He was greatly respected by the literati there. Chang was noted for his landscapes and for his realistic portrayal of human figures. Although the exact date of his death is not known, he is known to have lived at least to the age of 92.
