Freely sketched, the coloring is delicately light. Although the subject matter is the “flower of wealth,” the painting still has a pure elegance and unworldly air. Wang Wu was a noted connoisseur from a wealthy family of collectors in Ch’ang-chou, Kiangsu. He studied Sung, Yűan, and Ming works, determined to imbibe the methods of the old masters. Consequently the brushwork of his flower-and-bird and animal paintings is full of vitality and completely free of academic mannerisms. Famous in his own time, he is ranked with Yűn Shou-p’ing in the flower-and-bird genre of painting. His works are often mistaken for those of Shen Chou and Ch’en Ch’un. &*1.〈清王武書畫合璧〉,收入國立故宮博物院編輯委員會編,《牡丹名畫特展圖錄》(臺北:國立故宮博物院,1987年四月初版),頁42。
