During the reign of the K’ang-hsi Emperor (1662-1722), Ku served as a Painter-in-Waiting in the Inner Palace. He excelled in figure and narrative subjects as well as in sketches from life. In this painting a scholar enjoys his ch’in in the solitude of his retreat amid snowy mountains. The brushwork is rather workman-like, but is modeled on that of the great Yüan dynasty master, Huang Kung-wang (active 14th century).
