He received the chin-shih degree in 1709 and pursued an official career which culminated in his appointment as President of the Board of Justice. A scholar of wide learning, he excelled as poet and essayist and studied music and the Buddhist scriptures. He earned particular fame in calligraphy, which he practiced along with painting in his leisure time. He usually painted figures and flowers with a lofty brush. Plum blossoms were his favorite subject, which he generally treated in small paintings of detached branches. He did not pursue detailed likeness but casually outlined the forms, spaced the flowers, and touched in the details, creating an impression of natural elegance and refinement.
