Her hao was Shang-yüan ti-tzu but later she also adopted the sobriquet Nan-lou lao-jen. She married Ch’ien Lun-kuang of Chia-hsing, and was the mother of Ch’ien Ch’en-chün who served as a high official during the reign of the Ch’ien-lung Emperor (1736-1796). Because of her son’s eminent position she was given the title T’ai-shu jen. She was a talented painter of landscapes, figures, bird-and-flowers, and insects-and-grasses. In depicting landscapes she frequently worked in the manner of the Yüan dynasty master Wang Meng. This painting employs the small “ox-hair” texture strokes associated with the Wang Meng tradition, but also uses a number of dots as well. The ink is applied lightly so that the vitality of the lines and dots is preserved.
