His tzu (style name) was Yuan-piao, and his hao (sobriquets) Hsiao-shan, Jang-ch’ing, and in later years Erh-chih lao-jen. In 1727 he received his chin-shih degree, being appointed to positions in the Department of Rites and in the Secretariat of State. He wrote the Hsiao-shan Catalogue of Paintings and himself painted flowers, maintaining a family style which was noted for the sharp delineation of branches and the matted effect of leaves which give an impression of great naturalism. He used bright clear colours which give a refined yet brilliant quality to his paintings. However most of his paintings were done to imperial order and thus tended to be formal, rarely mani-festating a free and spontanious touch.
