He received his chin-shih civil service degree in 1733 and, due to his broad knowledge and investigative skills, was summoned to court, where he served as assistant editor of palace collection catalogues, such as the Shih-chüpao-chi. He later went on to serve as President of the Board of Rites. Naturally gifted in painting and calligraphy, he followed the landscape painting styles of Yüan (1279-1368) masters. In this painting is a long embankment connected to a bridge, fine woods in luxuriant growth, and a winding path that penetrates the solitude things visible and things screened from view make for interesting contrasts. Willow trees lean as they are being gently blown by a breeze which skims the water surface dotted with lotus leaves by the edge of the embankment. A pavilion and covered corridor are partly hidden in the shade. The idea of this painting is to fully express the scenery of peacefully living by a lake on a summer day.
