Following in the family style of painting, his achievement surpassed that of his contemporaries. He is one of the Four Great Masters of the Ch’ing. Depicted here are mountain peaks encircled with clouds and mist, a running stream, and scattered villages. The composition is complex yet organized and the details, likewise, are intricate yet ordered. The artist’s arrangement of the surface is exquisite in terms of the complementary forms and spaces. The layering of forms is clear and the structuring solid. Though mountains and trees appear casually rendered, the mature brushwork comes from Wang’s years of disciplined practice.
