Su was a great litterateur and artist, and along with his father Xun and brother Zhe were known as the “Three Sus.” He and Huang Tingjian, Mi Fu, and Cai Xiang are referred to as the Four Song Masters. In calligraphy, Su Shi combined the virtues of the Two Wangs, Yan Zhenqing, Li Yong, and Yang Ningshi, his style fully revealing a loose, unbridled boldness. The characters here are full in form with characters being steady and dense, the vertical strokes heavy but the horizontal ones light, and the diagonal strokes extending to the left but contracted to the right much in his individual manner. This leaf is from the album “Collection of the Four Song Masters.”(20100102)
