A noted landscape painter, Kuo did not rely on models but took his inspiration from nature. He belonged to a convivial group of artists that included Wu Wei, Tu Chin and Shen Chou. In the Hung-chih reign period (1488-1505), when the emperor was searching for artistic talent, Kuo was summoned to the capital. Later, he refused a call to service by Prince Ning (Chu Ch’en-hao), who revolted in 1519, and gave his allegiance to Wang Shou-jen, the official who eventually crushed Prince Ning’s revolt. Kuo Hsü was primarily a landscape painter, but also painted a variety of other subjects. Some of his casual figure paintings are of great interest. This scroll depicts a story about Hsieh An’s (320-385) excursion to Mt. Tung with his courtesans. Hsieh An, premier of Eastern Chin, became renowned by defeating Fu Chien’s invading armies in the battle at the River Fei.
