He studied the landscape painting of Huang Kung-wang and Ni Tsan of the Yüan dynasty (1279-1368), and was particularly fond of Ni Tsan, capturing the essence of his painting. He was also able to paint plum blossoms, orchids, bamboo, and rocks, creating elegant compositions. On a grassy bank near some rocks, orchids and bamboo grow intertwined. The brushwork is strong and fluid, and the ink tonalities varied. The orchid leaves which waver and twist in the wind displaying all sorts of shapes balance the one-sided composition. The entire painting reveals a strong but gentle, delicate, and refined atmosphere. This is the sixth leaf in the album Flowers by Ming Artists (Ming hua-hui hua-ts’e).
