He was the grandson of the famous painter Wang Shih-min (1592-1680). He received his chin-shih degree during the reign of the Kang-hsi Emperor, and later served as a vice minister of revenue. He painted in his family style and is considered one of the great masters of that period. In 1700, Wang Yűan-ch’i was fifty-eight years old. On the evening of the first full moon of the lunar year, his friends Chiang T’ien-yűan, Chang Chih-chao, and Wu Li came calling. Since Wu Li had not visited Wang for twenty years, the meeting was particularly enjoyable. Wang Yűan-ch’i painted this scroll to commemorate this event. The brush and inkwork are exquisite and the colors are elegant, filling the paper with an air of great refinement. Wang’s style is unique, and this is one of his finest works. &*1.江兆申,〈清王原祁畫中有詩圖〉,收入胡賽蘭編,《清王原祁畫山水畫軸特展》(臺北:國立故宮博物院,1997年初版),頁119。
