&* Some sources state that Chang Ch’ung was a native of Chiang-ning (modern Nanking), while others state that he was from Chiang-tu (modern Yangchow). His style name was Tzu-yü and his sobriquet was Nan-t’u. He specialized in paintings of figures, especially ladies, and his landscape paintings were also quite good. His works are stylistically similar to those of the Che Sschool painter Chang Lu. This painting depicts an immortal with wind-blown hair holding a broom. Ling-chih (spirit) fungi, associated with the idea of immortality, hang from his belt. The broom, fungi and clothing folds were all painted in lively, but simple, brushstrokes, achieving a sense of archaic grandeur. All of these characteristics are appropriate to the depiction of such a lofty immortal. &*1.
