&* Chiang P’u (style name Chih-p’u and sobriquet Heng-hsüan) was a native of Ch’ang-shu, Kiangsu and the son of Chiang T’ing-hsi (1669-1732). In 1730, he came in fourth place in the metropolitan examination and was employed in the Southern Study of the K’ang-hsi emperor (r. 1723-1735). In 1753, he was promoted to Grand Secretary. He excelled at painting flowers, following in the family tradition. Arranging compositions at will, his paintings possess a lively feel. They often bear imperial inscriptions by the Ch’ien-lung emperor (r. 1736-1795). In 1752, Chiang P’u was among the retinue which accompanied the Ch’ien-lung emperor (r. 1736-1795) to the Mu-lan hunting range. When they arrived at Mt. Sai, they proceeded through a dense fog enveloping everything, creating a mystical experience for those present. The Ch’ien-lung emperor composed “Song on the fog at Mt. Sai” and Chiang P’u was ordered to do the painting. &*1.
