Ming Dynasty Ch’en Kua was a native of Soochow and the son of the painter Ch’en Ch’un. Broadminded and fond of drink, he carried in the tradition of the “Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove.” He specialized in painting flowers, following his father’s style. His brushwork was spirited and use of ink rich. He is known for his paintings of plum blossoms. This is the 5th leaf from the album Flowers of the Four Seasons. This album represents ten kinds of flowers done in sketch-like fashion. Here, the lotus is shown in full blossom and done with fluent Brushwork. The unconnected strokes of the petals and veins and beaming elegance of blossom give the impression of the lotus (or perhaps the artist) almost being drunk.
