An accomplished calligrapher in semi-standard script, he especially excelled at painting, associating with such artistic luminaries as Chu Yün-ming (1460-1526) and Wen Cheng-ming (1470-1559). Atop a solitary precipice sits a monk gazing at a vast misty river. Below the cliff, water roars and splashes. This work was completed by Lu Chih in 1563 at the age of 67. The tonality of the mountains and rocks here is quite distinct, and the composition almost appears to have departed from reality, suggesting the transformational nature of Lu’s style at the time.
