Originally, he was named Wen Pi, with the style name of Cheng-ming, but later he went by his style name and took an additional one of Cheng-chung. He was also known by the sobriquets T'ing-yün-sheng and Heng-shan chü-shih. Wen studied under Shen Chou, adapting what he learned to his own tastes and creative vent, and became one of the Four Masters of the Ming. Due to his long and productive life, there are many of his works left to us today. In this scene, a small conical hill rises up out of waters whipped into a myriad rolling waves, with billowed-out sails scuttling in all directions. There is a feeling of boundless space as water and sky merge into one vastness. The entire scroll is executed in brushwork using the center-tip of the brush. It is forceful and vigorous, and although rendered quite casually, the brush and ink are full of assurance. The inscription in T'ang clerical script calligraphy was energetically executed in rich ink.&*1.江兆申,〈文徵明金山圖 軸〉,收入國立故宮博物院編,《吳派畫九十年展》(臺北:國立故宮博物院,1975年初版,1976年再版,1981年三版),頁307。
