His life is largely unknown. The God of longevity is also respected as the Star of the Aged or the Old Man of the South Pole. He is a symbol of long life and his portrait is usually deemed an auspecious representation. In this picture, the God of longevity is depicted as a benign old man with a towering forehead which is his characteristic appearance. The inscription says that this picture is a copy of a Sung original.
