A native of T'ai-ts'ang, Kiangsu, she was an accomplished painter and worked very much in her father's style. Her landscape and figure paintings reveal the brushwork of an uncommonly refined caliber. Critics have praised the artist's father, saying of his brushwork that it resembled "hairs of emerald jade and threads of gold; whether he used strands of color or filaments in monochrome, they were of a delicate beauty that even the ancients would not have been dismayed." Such an accolade could equally describe this painting by his daughter. Horizontal banks of clouds encircle a small grove of exotic trees and clusters of blossoming peonies. Before them stands the solitary figure of a woman, palely made up and exquisitely attired. The artist's meticulous craftsmanship and incomparably fine sense of coloring belie her signature, which reads "Playfully done by C'iu of Wu-men."
