As a child his family was so poor that it was unable to buy books. Later, he was taken in as a literary and painting student by Wen Cheng-ming, from whom he learned the techniques of ink and brush. Ch’ien Ku’s landscapes are lively and attractive, and his depictions of orchids and bamboo are most accomplished. This painting follows faithfully in the style of Wen Cheng-ming. The artist painted it in his 65th year. Men and horses are stiff from the cold, and a man in a vermillion coat leans against a hedge, observing the snowy scene. The waters and sky are dim and dark, while mountains and valleys are covered with a contrasting white blanket of snow. The atmosphere rendered is chilling and bleak
