Ming Dynasty Chu K’an was a native of Ch’ang-shou, Kiangsu. He excelled at figure painting. In landscapes, he studied the style of the Sung painter Hsia Kuei. This painting represents a youth wearing a red robe with a light green collar. He reverently holds a sūtra (Buddhist canon) in a blue cover. White clouds float all around. The colors are elegant, and the brushwork is detailed and mature. This youthful figure is a manifestation of the Mañjuśrī, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom. Other manifestations of this figure take the form of a monk and a dragon maiden. When Mañjuśrī, appears as a youth, he is usually shown as a young man with untied hair and a sūtra in hand among the clouds, as shown in this painting.
