- 內容摘要說明：. A charming day…I sent A Hoa' Sun-a and Lan He a few days since to several country places north of this viz.'He-io' Po-thau and Sin-tsng-a etc. These have been visited by myself and preachers pretty regularly during past years…I have been invited repeatedly to establish stations there' but delayed both to test them and because of work elsewhere… No doubt learning I was sway with Dr. Rennie on the East-coast. Spanish priests went and endeavored to establish themselves…One rented a small house for a while and the tree(3) preachers now report to me the sayings of priests and people…Especially a head man(Tsong-li) I. two servants of the priests went as spies having heard the people talked of a chapel(I.E.) wished me to go amongst them which I delayed for several reasons… These spies said their church would give money to all who would enter…etc. II. Two priests then proceeded there and told the Head man to gather a crowd and they would give him $70' as(Kong-lo-gun)Merit money. III. The Head man said he had a plot of ground 25 ft. wide and 35 or so long and wanted $1000 for it…The priest offered $700…The Head man only cared for the money' not for a church. IV. The people were told that $20'000 would be spent there… --that they would build a large Hospital. --that they erect a Girl's School --that they furnish a School for boys. And that $ 30 would be given to all poor men so as to get wives… Also that every one entering the church would get $ 3 per. Month. All the people told the three men (a Hoa' He and Sun-a) that if I would establish a chapel etc. ground would be given free… There was only one voice(apart from the Head man expecting money) about which church they preferred.
