- 內容摘要說明：Wishing to make enquries and examine about the serpent in my room. Tuesday night I have not written till now…About 11p.m. I was busy at work in my upper room (which is built over an old kitchen) when I heard a noise amongst papers. It did not sound like rats so I called on there below. In a moment several were inside below and pinned the tail end of a snake to the wall…It did not take long for me to pierce the head with its extended neck by means of a Chinese spear given me…Blood flowed freely from the wound. Soon we had him secure' dead indeed and at full length measured nine English feet…His head was protected by nine plates. The head was triangular and depressed. His body highly marked. Fangs and very small teeth leaning backwards were observable on close examination. It was very similar the Hamandryad? Type. The noise made by it when pierced was peculiar and I don't know any thing like it…The Chinese were terribly afraid of it even after death and persisted it should be buried deep…Strange indeed! for all declared they never saw the kind of serpent before! So much for native information in which I never take much stock…In the afternoon of the same day a large harmless snake was killed in a banana tree. It is often eaten and its skin used for medicine and guitars…
