Sheng excelled at painting landscapes, birds-and-flowers, and figures. He initially studied under Ch'en Lin, but he was able to establish a style of his own as his skill matured. This work represents a riverbank and trees. A scholar wearing a red robe sits under a tree with a fishing rod by his side as he leisurely looks out over the water. On the opposite shore are mountains rising above the clouds. The descriptions of the tree trunks are very fine with the whorls and bark appearing especially realistic. The leaves are done mostly with dabs of ink that are orderly yet lively and varied. The handling of brush and ink is refined and pure.
