Coming from a wealthy family, he built a studio called the ch'ing-pi-ko, "the hall of inviolate purity," in which he collected ancient books and paintings. He was himself good at painting landscapes. In this work one spray of bamboo is painted with a few casually simple strokes. It is unassuming yet full of graceful beauty. As with the painting "Forests Dwellings at Chu-ch'u" by Ni's contemporaty Wang Meng and also in this museum, this is dedicated to a certain Jih-chang, whose identity is unknown. The inscription on this work also refers to a "Mr. Shen,"who took great delight in calligraphy; perhaps this is the same man as Jih-chang.
